Front-Tooth Veneer Side Effects: Redoing Gum Inflammation

One of the things people worry about with front-tooth veneer treatment

is side effects.

Among those side effects, gum inflammation is probably the most common.

Occasional tooth sensitivity

can also be seen as one of many possible side effects,

but with proper treatment,

these side effects shouldn't normally occur.

That said, with gum inflammation, even if the treatment itself was done well,

it can commonly occur if gum care isn't kept up.

The problem isn't the level of gum care —

it's when the design of the front-tooth veneer itself is flawed,

or when the tooth was reduced incorrectly.

In those cases, no matter how well the gum is cared for,

the inflammation can keep coming back.

Let's take a look at how to treat this kind of recurring

gum inflammation, a side effect of front-tooth veneers,

in a case like this.

This patient came in with the entire gumline in an extremely severe state of inflammation.

She was from China,

and after receiving treatment in Korea and returning to China,

the inflammation began a few months later,

and no matter how well she cared for it, the inflammation kept coming back repeatedly, she said.

It was a genuinely severe case of inflammation just to look at.

First, I tried removing the veneer.

Honestly, it was reduced so much that it felt embarrassing to even call it a veneer —

the tooth had been reduced far too much.

When a tooth is reduced this much,

the likelihood of side effects like tooth sensitivity is also very high.

It was a genuinely embarrassing situation that treatment like this had been done here in Korea.

In a case like this, the principle is to take enough time,

let the gum inflammation settle down,

and finish treatment only once the gum is healthy again.

In the meantime, temporary teeth need to be made very precisely

to treat the inflammation,

but since this patient had come from China and needed to go back within a week,

treatment had to be carried out quickly, with no other option.

First, temporary teeth were made,

and we decided to finish treatment a week later.

Normally, after making temporary teeth,

an even more precise set of temporary teeth is set again a week later,

and it's better to observe for about a month.

A week later, you can see the gum had improved a great deal.

Since treatment had to be finished urgently,

as long as the color and shape of the tooth were acceptable,

there was no choice but to proceed straight to the final setting.

Finishing a front-tooth veneer redo this quickly

is probably something unique to this particular case.

The design of the ceramic

needs to be done properly, following sound principles.

The most important thing is that the part touching the tooth

needs to fit the tooth well.

When the tooth has been reduced deep into the gum,

getting that fit right becomes very difficult.

So because the first treatment was done without any real principle behind it,

the redo ends up being that much harder.

A few months later, the patient came back to see me.

You can see the gum inflammation had noticeably decreased,

but it still wasn't quite enough.

Gum treatment was carried out,

and I gave her detailed instruction on how to brush properly.

Proper brushing is one of the core elements of front-tooth veneers.

I told her that since she'd already had to go through a redo, she needed to be even more careful going forward,

and she came in again quite a while after that.

You can confirm that the inflammation had completely disappeared.

As if the inflammation had never even been there,

the gum was in a completely clean state.

Even viewed from another angle,

the gum inflammation was completely gone,

and you can confirm that the side effect of the front-tooth veneer had been fully resolved.
