Redoing Awkward, Artificial-Looking Front-Tooth Veneers to Look Natural

Veneer treatment is one method

of cosmetic dental work aimed at making teeth more attractive.

As it's become quite trendy lately,

more and more clinics have started churning out veneers like a factory.

To produce veneers in high volume like a factory,

the fabrication method has to be simple.

As a result,

rather than looking like a natural tooth,

more and more veneers are turning out looking awkward and artificial to anyone who sees them.

Because they're made quickly and cheaply,

results like this have become increasingly common.

Making veneers look natural

takes a lot of time and money.

The fast fabrication method isn't done by hand;

it's designed by computer and made by machine,

milling the ceramic down.

Because the entire piece of ceramic is a single color

and has the same level of light transmission all the way through,

the result is usually opaque and simply white —

an unnatural, awkward-looking outcome.

Only the two front teeth had been treated with veneers.

Looking clearly different from the natural teeth was one problem,

but the shape of the teeth was also square,

with no sense of a natural tooth at all.

Through a redo of these two veneers,

in order to achieve teeth that are far more natural and beautiful,

we carried out a diagnosis for treatment.

The proportion between a tooth's length and width is very important,

but with the height and width the same, forming a square,

a tooth simply can't look beautiful to begin with,

and there was no sense of dimensionality at all,

with the veneer's color also unnaturally flat and uniform.

As shown on the right, a natural tooth

has variation even within a single tooth.

The color differs by area,

and there's a translucent layer at the tooth tip.

All of this needs to be captured,

so having only these two front teeth in a single flat color made them inevitably look unnatural.

Using wax,

we planned out how to achieve

better proportions and dimensionality, then began treatment.

We removed the veneers.

You could already tell, at removal, that a considerable amount of tooth structure had been taken away.

Minimizing damage to the tooth is extremely important when removing veneers.

Using a variety of ceramics and working entirely by hand,

we fabricated the veneers.

The result was finished to the point where it's genuinely hard to tell

which tooth is natural

and which is the veneer.

We kept the natural coloring

and preserved the full range of a tooth's expression,

and the translucency at the tooth tip was expressed

in a way that's both quite realistic and natural.

Even viewed from a variety of angles,

it's difficult to tell the redone veneer apart from the natural teeth,

and the teeth themselves look truly beautiful.

Compared with the original teeth,

the difference in translucency is clearly visible.

Comparing the whole before-and-after,

the shape, dimensionality, coloring, and translucency of the teeth after the redo

have all become dramatically more beautiful and natural.
