All-Ceramic Crown and Veneer Retreatment

Just as a natural tooth can decay or develop gum problems and need extraction without proper care,

most dental treatment has a lifespan.

Just as a general prosthesis is usually thought to last around 5 years,

dental contouring can also generally be viewed as having a typical lifespan of around 5 years.

However, since the front teeth aren't used for chewing food the way molars are,

they tend to be used somewhat longer,

and while it varies with factors like sex, dietary habits, or teeth grinding,

it's generally thought of as lasting around 7 to 10 years.

Material quality has improved a lot compared to the past, and bonding has become quite reliable,

so in practice, rather than the ceramic of a veneer or crown chipping,

patients more often come in because the tooth has shifted over time or a gum issue has developed.

Whether or not dental contouring has been done, teeth keep moving throughout a person's life,

and while it varies a lot from person to person, cases fall into either the teeth crowding together and overlapping, or the teeth spreading apart.

In either case, if it happens after dental contouring, it can't look good aesthetically.

This case is no exception.

The two front teeth have all-ceramic crowns.

Over time, a gap opened up between them,

even though the crowns themselves have no problem.

In a case like this, orthodontic treatment could be used to move the teeth back into position,

but in this case, the tooth next to the front tooth, the lateral incisor, was undersized,

so we decided to do a veneer and all-ceramic crown redo on the undersized tooth at the same time.

Through the redo, we made it look far prettier and more natural than before.

The biggest feature of the dental contouring I do

is that it stays as close as possible to natural teeth.

Dental contouring that's only white and dull, with a shape far from natural teeth,

is easy to make from the clinic's side and can even be done in a single day, which is why it's become common these days,

but even though it's meant for an aesthetic purpose, it often ends up looking more awkward.
