Front-Tooth Veneer Retreatment for a Tooth Previously Filled with Resin

When a front tooth fractures,

resin filling is usually the first option for urgent treatment.

Resin is a tooth-colored material

that can be applied the same day.

It's fairly close to the tooth's own color,

but the issue is that its translucency and surface gloss differ from a real tooth.

As the filled area gets larger, this becomes noticeable.

An even bigger problem is that it discolors over time.

Depending on eating habits, the timing of the discoloration varies a great deal,

but there's the issue of needing to repeat this treatment every few years.

Front-tooth treatment for minors is usually done with resin,

and as patients get older, they tend to move on to all-ceramic crowns or veneers.

For retreatment,

if the area filled with resin is large,

an all-ceramic crown is used,

and if the area is small,

veneer treatment is used instead.

Since an all-ceramic crown requires reducing a large amount of the tooth,

root canal treatment is sometimes needed as well,

so for most sizes, a veneer tends to be the more favorable option.

This front tooth had a resin filling for a fracture.

Because of the camera flash lighting,

it may not look obvious,

but a substantial portion is made up of resin.

The tooth had been completely fractured.

This much of the tooth is the resin-filled area.

To treat a fracture of this size,

an all-ceramic crown is usually recommended in most cases.

The bite needs to be checked as well,

and generally speaking, I do think an all-ceramic crown can be a good option,

but since it dramatically increases the amount of tooth reduced

and raises the likelihood of needing root canal treatment,

it's better if veneer treatment is possible instead.

Many dentists, in cases like this,

choose an all-ceramic crown

out of concern over whether a veneer can bond reliably.

But from what I've learned over nearly 20 years of veneer treatment,

if proper bonding is achievable,

a case of this size can be treated with a veneer.

The resin was removed,

and the tooth was reduced

in preparation for the veneer.

Because the resin-filled area was so large,

it may look like a lot of the tooth was reduced,

but in fact, minimal reduction was carried out.

As long as this much surface area remains, there's no problem with the veneer's bonding and retention.

That said, if the veneer isn't fabricated properly, there can be a visible color difference

between the area where natural tooth remains and where it doesn't.

Only a clinic with a lot of experience can recognize and address this issue in advance.

The front-tooth veneer retreatment over the old resin was completed.

The tooth's shape now has clear dimensionality,

and the color faithfully retains the feel of a natural tooth.

You can also see that the translucency at the tooth edge is well expressed.
