Apgujeong Veneers Designed With the Whole Face in Mind

The ultimate purpose of Apgujeong veneer treatment is a beautiful smile.

For a smile to be beautiful, the face, lips, and teeth all need to be in harmony.

If treatment is planned by looking only at the teeth,

the overall harmony can be overlooked, and a great deal can be missed.

In particular, because of the nature of the dental profession,

there's a tendency to focus too much on the teeth alone.

What I've kept teaching in my recent lectures

is that veneer treatment should always begin by taking a step back.

Start from the overall look of at least the upper body,

down through the face, lips, and even the gums —

looking from a distance before approaching the teeth themselves is extremely important.

There are a few things to check in order to achieve harmony between the teeth and the face.

Surrounding anatomical structures such as face shape, the nose and philtrum, and the lips,

skin tone and gum color,

the amount of tooth shown when speaking or smiling,

and several other factors —

but the most important one among these is the angle of the teeth.

The angle at which the teeth tilt when viewed from the front,

or the angle at which they tilt when viewed from the side —

these angles play a considerable role in the smile.

If you look only at photos of the teeth like this,

it looks like a very simple Apgujeong veneer case.

The main goal is the esthetic correction of black triangles that appeared after orthodontic treatment,

along with correcting a canine that already had a crown and a tooth alignment that had shifted for the worse again after orthodontic treatment.

But if you look at it together with the face, a different issue becomes visible.

It's the overall angle of the teeth.

Looking at the whole face, you can see that the teeth are tilted to one side like this.

Without considering this kind of harmony with the face,

if you simply align the teeth to match their current shape,

you can't achieve an esthetically satisfying result.

You absolutely must check the angle relative to the face, and the number and amount of teeth exposed when speaking or smiling.

We also check how the result relates to the face once the treatment is done this way.

Taking all of these factors into account, we build the Apgujeong veneer treatment plan.

The amount of tooth reduction is decided based on that treatment plan.

While reliably achieving what the patient wants,

we need to find the most appropriate amount of tooth reduction that won't harm tooth health.

The simulation, down to the amount of tooth reduction, was completed.

Since one tooth already had a crown,

we proceeded with crown treatment on that tooth,

and for the rest, we were able to use even less reduction than the simulation had called for.

Here is the completed Apgujeong veneer.

From the shape and color of the teeth to their translucency,

the feel of natural teeth is fully preserved,

while achieving teeth that are even, bright, and beautiful.

You can see that gum health is also very good, adapting well to the ceramic.

You can see a beautiful Apgujeong veneer result from any angle.

Even the surface texture of the teeth

looks completely natural.

The shape and shading were also crafted to use optical illusion to resolve differences in tooth length.

From what was once an awkward smile,

it has become a smile in which the teeth, lips, and face are all in harmony.
