The esthetic factors involved in teeth are quite varied.

Broadly speaking, the first is the positional relationship between the face and the teeth.

You need to check the degree of protrusion and the tilt.

Next is the proportion of the teeth.

Tooth proportion consists of the ratio between teeth

and the ratio of the front teeth's length to width, along with symmetry.

No single ratio can be called the correct answer,

but it's important to work toward a proportion that satisfies both dentists and non-dentists alike.

Beyond that, there's the tooth's dimensionality, its varied shading and translucency, the position and length of the contact points between teeth, the degree of spacing at the tooth edges,

and harmony with the gums — many different aspects need to be considered.

What I'd like to talk about today is proportion.

Aside from the relationship with the face,

tooth esthetics should be seen as starting from proportion.

Unlike other fine details,

proportion is the part that catches the eye fastest, whether up close or from a distance.

In front teeth veneer treatment, deciding how to handle this proportion

is extremely important when planning before treatment.

Looking at this photo,

even someone who isn't a dentist would notice that the front tooth looks too large compared to the tooth beside it, the lateral incisor.

It simply isn't a proportion we're used to seeing.

Even if the actual width of the front tooth isn't excessively large,

if it's relatively large compared to the tooth next to it,

both teeth inevitably look quite large to the eye.

In cases like this, for esthetic purposes,

orthodontics or other methods can't achieve the correction,

and only veneers can treat it.

We measured the current tooth proportions.

Many dentists tend to be fixated on the so-called 'golden ratio.'

The golden ratio is generally taken to be around 1:1.6.

In trying to match this ratio to the teeth no matter what,

when calculating how much of each tooth is visible from the front,

making the front tooth 1.6 and the lateral incisor 1

is claimed to be the golden ratio and therefore the most beautiful.

But by the 2000s, this theory had already come to be

rejected by most dentists who perform esthetic treatment.

The golden ratio is used in many fields. In design, architecture, and other fields where visual stability matters,

it's used as a standard, but it doesn't apply to teeth.

The method I marked above is a proportion measurement method that emerged in the 2010s.

If you convert the golden ratio using the method above,

you get 62.5%.

The photo above is a case that's very close to the golden ratio,

yet no one looking at that photo would think it shows a beautiful tooth proportion.

This patient, too, wanted treatment because her front tooth looked too large and the tooth beside it relatively too small.

In conclusion,

many clinics and dentists still talk about the golden ratio in front teeth veneer treatment,

but that theory is no longer accepted,

and the optimal proportion should be found based on face shape and ethnicity,

and front teeth veneer treatment should be planned and carried out accordingly.

Not every case can be brought to an ideal proportion through front teeth veneer treatment.

The length and vertical proportion of the teeth, the ratio between teeth, and symmetry

are related not just to the teeth but also to the skeletal structure and dental arches,

so the most important thing is to achieve the best possible result within the given conditions.

The two front teeth needed to be made smaller,

while the other teeth needed to be made larger,

so the two front teeth underwent standard veneer reduction,

while the other teeth were either minimally reduced

or treated without any reduction at all.

The proportion between the teeth improved,

and with the added length, the smile looks more open and refreshing.
