Unnatural, Awkward-Looking Veneers Retreated to Look Natural

Looking at recent trends in veneer treatment,

unnatural-looking veneers have actually been increasing rather than natural-looking ones.

There's a reason for this outcome.

As computer-assisted veneer fabrication has become possible,

it's become cheaper in both time and long-term cost,

and the fabrication process has become much simpler,

so despite the esthetic advantages of a handmade veneer,

many cases are now being made with the simpler method instead.

Of course, with the computer-made method too,

if the finishing work is done well, a natural-feeling veneer is possible,

but as the recent trend has leaned toward finishing treatment quickly,

it seems the emphasis has shifted more toward simplifying the process than toward the esthetics of the result.

This seems especially pronounced when large quantities need to be made.

In the case of our clinic, Dream Dental Clinic,

for the sake of natural esthetics,

we fabricate our veneers by hand.

It's a much longer and more complex process than one made by computer,

but the satisfaction with the result is far higher.

Of course, beauty is a matter of preference,

so some people may prefer artificial-looking veneers.

The patient came in for retreatment

because her veneers looked far too unnatural and artificial after treatment.

The entire set of teeth was the same color, opaque,

and excessively white.

There was no three-dimensional quality in the shape of the teeth at all.

Through retreatment,

we decided to change them into natural-looking teeth.

Once the veneers were removed,

we found the teeth had been reduced quite a lot.

It was a somewhat excessive amount of reduction.

With handmade veneers, because the ceramic can be made extremely thin,

the tooth reduction itself ends up being less

than with the computer-made method.

Since the teeth had already been reduced,

to minimize further damage to the teeth,

we used a laser to remove the veneers.

Using temporary teeth,

we test in advance what size and proportion the treatment should aim for.

For any veneer treatment,

making temporary teeth is very important.

Not only does it protect the teeth that have been temporarily reduced,

it also lets us anticipate the treatment outcome.

It can't show fine detail,

but it does let us see the size, volume, and degree of protrusion and proportion of the teeth.

To make temporary teeth like this,

a detailed diagnosis has to be done.

The veneer retreatment has been completed.

The three-dimensional quality of the teeth has been fully brought out,

showing the shape of a natural tooth well.

You could say the angles of the tooth are kept alive.

If made flat with no three-dimensional quality, it ends up looking like a piece of xylitol gum stuck on.

Expressing translucency at the tip of the tooth is a very tricky process.

While being bright and white,

the translucency stays alive,

so the natural feel is clearly present.
