Retreatment of Front-Teeth Veneers for a Translucent Look
Hello. I'm Park Jonguk, head of Dream Dental Clinic.
After front-teeth veneer treatment,
done in order to make the teeth white,
there are quite a few cases where patients end up redoing it because the result looks too unnatural.
Being white essentially means being opaque.
You can't be both white and translucent.
Being translucent means you can see through to what's underneath,
and since the inside of the mouth is dark,
translucency can also end up meaning darker.
And yet many patients want front-teeth veneers
that are bright, white, and translucent all at once,
which is a fairly tricky request from an esthetic standpoint.
A natural tooth is mostly tinged with yellow or orange,
with a translucent layer over it,
which gives it depth and translucency along with relatively high saturation,
whereas white ceramic is bright but not translucent, and its saturation is lower.
To satisfy these various esthetic requirements,
veneers need to be fabricated by hand.
Please refer to the link below for the characteristics of the veneers at our clinic.
The patient came in from a state of veneers that were simply white
and overall opaque on the front teeth,
wanting to have them retreated with veneers that have a natural translucency.
The opacity of the teeth was a problem,
but the shape was equally unnatural.
For a more natural look,
we decided to add dimensional depth as part of the retreatment.
Dimensional depth is especially important for front-teeth veneers to look natural.
It's a matter of adding fine, detailed variation.
A natural tooth has line angles and mamelon lobes,
and the design incorporates all of these features.
Once the existing veneers were removed,
we found that far too much of the tooth had already been reduced.
Before the retreatment, the patient had mentioned ongoing tooth sensitivity,
and when a large amount has been reduced, the tooth can become sensitive and cause discomfort.
To reduce this kind of sensitivity,
the veneer needs to be bonded correctly and carefully after treatment.
With the old veneers removed for retreatment,
temporary teeth are made,
and the post-treatment shape is discussed with the patient.
The front-teeth veneer retreatment has been completed.
Looking at the shape of the teeth,
you can clearly sense the dimensional depth.
Dimensional depth like that of a natural tooth
is a good way to improve teeth that had looked unnatural.
With translucency added at the tip of the tooth,
you can see the natural feel come alive.
Even from various angles,
you can see that translucency has been added to the bright teeth.
Even the texture of the tooth surface
was rendered just like a natural tooth.
A shade that also suits the smile well was achieved.
With the tooth's natural dimensional depth
and translucent color both preserved,
the retreatment was successfully finished with bright, white teeth.
