Turning Resin-Treated Front Teeth Beautiful with Veneers

There are broadly two ways to treat front teeth in a tooth-colored material.

One is treatment using a material

called resin.

It can be done directly in the mouth and comes close to tooth color,

and it has the advantage of being relatively inexpensive.

But it has a significant drawback in that it discolors over time,

and another issue is that while it's similar to tooth color, it isn't identical.

No material can be completely identical to a natural tooth,

but while resin is tooth-colored, in terms of translucency and surface texture,

there's quite a noticeable difference once you look closely.

The other treatment method uses ceramic.

This is usually referred to as a front-tooth veneer or an all-ceramic crown.

Ceramic is essentially a form of porcelain.

If a tooth-colored ceramic is chosen well,

it can achieve the same translucency and surface texture as a natural tooth,

and it's harder than resin.

However, treatment doesn't finish in a single visit,

and the cost is relatively higher, which is a drawback.

This is a case where the front teeth had been treated with resin.

There was a gap between the front teeth, so resin was used to close it,

and two of the teeth were small — called peg-shaped teeth — so resin was used to treat those as well.

It looked good at first, but before long,

the discoloration you see here started to appear, according to the patient.

This isn't decay, meaning the tooth isn't rotting,

and for a molar it would be usable without any real problem,

but since front teeth carry a very important aesthetic function,

we decided to remove the resin to resolve this

and treat the teeth with front-tooth veneers instead.

We begin with an analysis of the current condition of the teeth

and a precision wax-up diagnosis to determine how treatment should proceed.

Treatment proceeds according to the plan established beforehand.

After removing all of the resin,

we proceed with the front-tooth veneer treatment in ceramic.

The amount of reduction differs from area to area on each tooth.

In this case, rather than the amount of tooth reduction,

removing the existing resin was the more important part of the process.

The veneers are fabricated in ceramic,

and treatment is finished.

A natural-looking veneer is the core of what we aim for.

It needs to feel bright while also having a clear, translucent quality.

Natural dimensionality matters a great deal in a tooth.

These various characteristics of a natural tooth need to be well captured.

The one-day method, made in a single day,

using computer-fabricated veneers, still struggles to express this kind of naturalness.

Of course, not every clinic that uses hand-crafted work can achieve a veneer this natural either.
