A Skilled Veneer Clinic's Retreatment of Overly White, Unnatural-Looking Veneers

By Park Jonguk, DDS, MS — board-certified specialist in conservative dentistry Published

Hello. I'm Park Jonguk, director of Dream Dental Clinic, a skilled veneer clinic.

Beautiful teeth need a range of design elements and details.

"White teeth" are usually thought of as pretty.

But are plain white, opaque teeth really pretty teeth?

On TV you can sometimes spot someone

whose teeth look unnaturally, awkwardly white.

If you meet someone like that in person,

you get the same feeling as when Jim Carrey turns into the character in the old movie "The Mask."

In many cases, you might as well have stuck a row of xylitol gum pieces on there.

The reason teeth like that keep getting made

is that they're very easy for a clinic to produce.

With just a computer and a milling machine,

one veneer can be made in 10 to 15 minutes after the design is set.

They can be churned out like products off a factory line.

In contrast, teeth with a lot of detail

and a variety of design work put into them

take a long time because they have to be made by hand.

The difference between mass-produced fast-fashion clothing

and hand-made luxury-brand clothing

shows up in exactly the same way in the veneer-making process.

All of the teeth were excessively white,

and the shape of every tooth looked far too much like a piece of xylitol gum.

It's already hard for teeth that are only white to look pretty,

and on top of that, the shape of the teeth had become far too square,

so the patient wanted it redone and came to our skilled veneer clinic.

We measure the proportions of the teeth,

the positional relationship between the face and teeth,

and check the shape of the dental arch,

then think through how to treat it in a way that improves the proportions.

In particular, when it comes to the shape of the teeth,

we prepare so the result can look more natural.

This diagnostic process

is the most important step in veneer treatment,

and thorough preparation is what leads to a good result.

After that, the veneer needs to be removed,

and this part matters a great deal.

Most clinics generally remove veneers

by grinding them off.

No matter how carefully this is done,

some damage to the tooth is unavoidable.

Laser-based veneer removal

works by melting the cement between the veneer and the tooth,

which minimizes damage to the tooth.

After removal, the tooth had been reduced far too much,

which was genuinely disappointing to see.

Thorough advance preparation is essential in the veneer treatment process,

and I always find myself thinking that this kind of excessive reduction wouldn't have been necessary

if the treatment had been carried out with a proper plan from the start.

Looking natural

doesn't mean the teeth end up dark or yellowish.

With brightness alongside living translucency,

and with the shape of the teeth

capturing a natural tooth form well, they can become bright, beautiful teeth.

Add a natural feel on top of that,

and it harmonizes well with the face and the smile.

At our skilled veneer clinic, the shape of every single veneer tooth

is based on the natural tooth,

shaped to become more beautiful,

and crafted with meticulous care.

Even the surface texture of the tooth is fully expressed,

and this kind of process inevitably takes a long time.
