Gangnam Veneers: Redoing Unnatural-Looking Veneers

Redoing Gangnam veneers is a fairly delicate process.

What caused the need for retreatment matters a great deal.

If the retreatment is due to a veneer coming off or fracturing,

it's important to identify the cause of the debonding or fracture.

If it's an occlusal issue, we need to check whether it can be resolved,

and if the debonding or fracture happened because too much tooth structure was removed,

we have to decide whether a crown should be used instead of a veneer.

If the fracture or debonding is due to a habit or trauma, care must be taken after retreatment.

If it's not one of these issues but an aesthetic concern,

extensive consultation with the patient is needed.

What exactly is wrong with the current shape,

and how the patient wants it changed

must be clearly confirmed before proceeding with treatment.

We also need to check whether the change the patient wants is actually achievable.

The patient visited us to have old Gangnam veneers redone.

Not because of debonding or fracture,

but the patient wanted retreatment for aesthetic improvement.

The two front teeth were different sizes, and three veneers had been placed,

each made differently so that they didn't match each other at all.

On top of that, the tooth that had undergone root canal treatment had neither a veneer nor a crown on it.

When a tooth undergoes root canal treatment,

it generally weakens, so placing a crown is common.

However, since front teeth aren't subjected to much force when chewing,

unless there's a problem with shape or color,

a crown isn't always necessary.

In this case, the shape of the tooth wasn't good,

so we decided to treat it together while redoing the veneers.

Symmetry between the two front teeth matters most,

and making the lateral incisors' shape more natural is fundamental,

while the shape of the teeth should also match the patient's face shape

and look more natural.

By adding translucency to the teeth,

we decided to proceed with retreatment for younger, more beautiful-looking teeth.

At this stage, removing the existing Gangnam veneers is important.

Veneers are usually ground off,

but this can damage the tooth,

so care is needed.

When a laser is used to remove the veneer,

damage to the tooth can be minimized.

Now a treatment plan needs to be established.

We measure the positional relationship between the face and teeth, as well as how much tooth shows when speaking or smiling,

and check the proportions and symmetry among the teeth.

We also check for protrusion from the side profile,

and after determining how much tooth structure to remove,

we plan the treatment using a wax mock-up.

With the treatment plan set this way,

we remove the existing Gangnam veneers accordingly and proceed with retreatment.

Natural-looking,

and more beautiful teeth were the result of the completed retreatment.

The proportions of the teeth improved considerably,

and by clearly bringing out the translucency, the teeth now look even younger.

The natural three-dimensional quality of the teeth matters a great deal for that natural feel.

You can see that the shape, brightness, and translucency have all improved remarkably.
