Sinsa-dong Dental Clinic: Veneer Retreatment for a Natural Feel

By Park Jonguk, DDS, MS — board-certified specialist in conservative dentistry Published

Hello, I'm Park Jonguk, director of Dream Dental Clinic in Sinsa-dong.

Retreating a front-tooth veneer that's already been done once

involves a few things that need to be considered.

Before starting treatment,

you need to check exactly what's wrong with the existing veneer,

and also make sure to check whether retreatment can actually solve it.

If the reason for retreatment

is that the veneer came off or fractured,

then there's not much of a problem,

but if it's an issue with the veneer itself, such as

aesthetic dissatisfaction or gum inflammation,

you absolutely need to weigh whether it can actually be resolved.

Aesthetic issues are quite a subjective matter,

so it takes detailed conversation and consultation

just to start with what specifically the patient isn't happy with.

And on top of that, how that issue can actually be resolved

also needs a thorough, detailed explanation.

This patient had multiple teeth already treated with veneers.

The patient had been unhappy with the aesthetic result ever since the treatment,

but had simply been living with it for several years.

To resolve the aesthetic issue, the patient decided to have retreatment done at Dream Dental Clinic in Sinsa-dong.

Three teeth already had veneers,

while, interestingly, the root-canal-treated tooth had neither a veneer nor a crown.

Looking at the proportions in the current state,

the front teeth were relatively wide compared to their length,

and the symmetry of the tooth shapes was off.

The shape of the teeth felt less like a natural tooth

and more like the patient was wearing temporary teeth,

an aesthetically quite lacking state.

It didn't have any of the qualities a natural tooth should have.

The color of the teeth was odd enough to make you wonder if it was done this way on purpose,

a murky, unnatural state.

The two front teeth protruded quite noticeably,

and didn't harmonize with the other teeth either.

Starting from this state, we carried out retreatment with 6 veneers, including the canines,

to achieve an aesthetic improvement.

At this stage, removing the existing veneers matters a great deal.

If a veneer is simply ground off to remove it,

it can damage the tooth, so at Dream Dental Clinic in Sinsa-dong

we use a laser removal technique that minimizes damage to the tooth.

After removing the veneers

and making temporary teeth, this is the state.

Using the temporary teeth,

we consult with the patient on the size, proportion, and volume of the teeth

and adjust them together, step by step.

Through this process of working it out together with the patient,

we can fabricate an aesthetic veneer suited to the individual's own taste.

The veneer treatment has been completed.

While keeping the three-dimensionality of a natural tooth alive,

the retreatment was finished with a natural, bright color.

The sense of translucency at the tooth tips

is a feature seen only in young teeth, and expressing it

is quite a demanding task,

so it's often left out entirely.

But reproducing this detail is a very important part of the overall aesthetic.
