Treating Black Triangles Between the Front Teeth with Veneers

Front teeth can have all kinds of esthetic problems.

Alignment, shape, color, and several other factors all need to come together in harmony

for a beautiful set of front teeth and a beautiful smile.

What causes these esthetic problems

isn't just the teeth.

It's actually a gum problem.

Unlike periodontitis or gingivitis,

where removing the cause of the inflammation

resolves the problem,

here the issue is that the shape of the teeth and the condition of the gums

combine to create an unesthetic result,

and the most common of these is what's called a black triangle —

gum recession in the space between the front teeth.

There are various causes.

Problems with tooth shape, problems with the position of the gum bone,

changes after orthodontic treatment, and so on —

the treatment approach can differ slightly depending on the cause,

but in the end, it's usually resolved with veneers.

When the gums show through as a dark triangle between the teeth like this,

it's called a black triangle.

As mentioned earlier,

because there are so many different causes —

problems with the position of the gum bone, problems with tooth shape,

and cases caused by orthodontic treatment, among others —

a great many people have this problem.

In most cases, it's resolved with veneers.

In addition to the black triangles,

we decided to treat the areas that already had resin fillings

all at the same time.

The current condition of the teeth included some wear to their shape,

and the tooth color had a fair amount of staining,

so all of the esthetic problems needed to be addressed together.

Through the diagnostic wax-up process,

we had to plan out the treatment in advance.

In line with the plan, we proceeded

with tooth reduction for the veneers.

When the resin areas were removed,

discoloration in the tooth was confirmed.

There had been congenital discoloration at the tip of the tooth,

and it was the area that had been treated with resin,

so covering that discoloration was an important part of the plan.

Aside from that tooth,

almost no reduction was needed.

The front-tooth veneer treatment is now complete.

The black triangles were treated effectively.

The shape of the teeth was given added dimensionality,

which makes them feel even more natural,

and the translucency at the tooth tips was preserved, expressing young, beautiful teeth.

The color of the veneers

blends well with the natural teeth.

Rather than being made from a single color,

they're made from a combination of different colors,

which is what makes them feel natural.
