Dream Dental Clinic's Natural, Beautiful Veneers

By Park Jonguk, DDS, MS — board-certified specialist in conservative dentistry Published

Hello. I'm Park Jonguk, director of Dream Dental Clinic.

For improving the shape and color of the front teeth,

the cosmetic tooth treatment used is veneers.

While reducing the tooth as little as possible,

veneers offer the advantage of making teeth beautiful.

Reducing the tooth less

means the ceramic used to fabricate the veneer ends up considerably thinner.

This is where the difference between clinics shows up.

Since the ceramic is thin, if it's made from a single material,

the whole tooth ends up a single color and mostly opaque,

looking almost like a piece of xylitol gum stuck on,

resulting in an awkward, artificial-looking veneer.

This is the kind of look you end up with.

White and blocky,

it really looks awkward.

Of course, plenty of people do like this look.

It's just that it isn't natural.

Veneers made this way, in a single color,

are also quite simple to make.

Most one-day veneers

produce this kind of result.

It's a limitation of the one-day method.

This shows the before and after.

Expressing a natural tooth requires a range of design elements.

A natural tooth has natural dimension, varied color, and, in younger teeth, translucency.

A veneer made simply as white as possible

can't really be called aesthetic.

Fitting this kind of range of expression

into extremely thin ceramic

requires exceptional skill.

The one-day method,

as long as a clinic has the right equipment,

is fabricated by computer and milling machine,

so any clinic can do it,

but bringing out this kind of natural feel

is something a computer can't replace.

You can think of it like the difference between off-the-rack fast-fashion clothing and a luxury, made-to-measure piece.

An aesthetic, natural veneer that's extremely thin and carries a range of expression,

made entirely by hand, simply can't be produced in a single day.

To bring out the feel of a natural tooth,

a range of expression has to be included.

In particular, the translucency at the tip of the tooth

is almost a symbol of youthful teeth.

Expressing translucency, in veneer fabrication,

is the most demanding part.

As a result, many veneers

end up made opaque,

and patients are practically told that this kind of veneer is what "aesthetic" is supposed to look like.

Veneers that are so white and opaque that they look unnatural to anyone

are being insisted on as "aesthetic."

The reason is simple: the alternative is hard to make.

This is the result of treating the case shown above.

You can see how the once-awkward teeth changed into something natural and beautiful.

This shows undersized teeth alongside larger teeth together.

The difference in tooth size was so large

that it looked awkward.

In particular, since the two front teeth were too large,

making a case like this look natural

takes a great deal of careful thought,

and requires making good use of varied color and tooth shape.

The area near the root of the tooth is deliberately

given a curved shape along with a subtle yellow stain.

Doing this creates an optical illusion,

making the tooth look smaller than it is.

Achieving this kind of varied expression

requires excellent technical skill and an eye for aesthetics.

When it comes to aesthetic veneers

that pursue natural beauty,

Dream Dental Clinic excels at this.
