Gum Veneers: Recreating Receded Gums with Pink Porcelain

Today I'd like to talk about gum veneers.
This is a special treatment that recreates receded gum tissue using pink veneers.
What do you do when the gums recede?
When the gums recede, exposing the tooth root or leaving the gum looking empty, it becomes a major aesthetic problem.
The teeth look longer, and once the roots are exposed, sensitivity can develop as well.
When the left and right gumlines don't match, the whole smile looks unbalanced.
Recreating the Gum with Pink Porcelain
In cases like this, pink porcelain can be used to recreate that area with a veneer or an all-ceramic crown.
When making the veneer or crown, the tooth portion is made in tooth color, and the receded gum portion is made in gum color (pink).
This is called a gum veneer, or a pink veneer.
It's a groundbreaking method for recreating the gum without surgery.
Case 1: Canine Gum Recession, Resolved with No-Prep Veneers
Before Treatment
As you can see in Photo 1, the gum around the canine had receded.
The gum on the canine side had receded, exposing the tooth root.
It looked awkward because the gumline didn't match the other teeth.
Choosing a Treatment Method
There are two approaches in a case like this.
Periodontal surgery: a surgical procedure to raise the gum. It takes a long time, and the success rate isn't 100%.
Gum veneer: a method of recreating the gum with pink porcelain.
A choice had to be made between periodontal surgery and veneers, and we decided to do no-prep veneers while making the gum-side portion in gum color.
Since these are no-prep veneers, the tooth isn't cut at all.
If a problem arises later, the veneer can simply be removed.
It's a reversible, safe method.
After Treatment
Photo 2 shows the appearance after treatment.
It's a remarkable change.
The receded gum was perfectly recreated.
The gum color was expressed naturally, so it looks just like real gum tissue.
The left and right gumlines are now symmetrical, giving a balanced look.
Since the tooth wasn't cut at all, the veneer can be removed at any time.
Case 2: Gum Recreation for Gumline Symmetry
The Situation Before Treatment
This patient had already received all-ceramic crowns and veneer treatment.
When a veneer came off, it was decided to redo the whole treatment.
Photo 1 shows the appearance before treatment.
The left and right gumlines didn't match.
The gum on the crown side sat higher, creating an asymmetry.
The Treatment Plan
To achieve gumline symmetry, we decided to recreate the gum on the all-ceramic crown side.
When making the crown, we planned to fill in the area lacking gum tissue with pink porcelain.
This makes it possible to bring the left and right gumlines into symmetry without surgery.
After Treatment
Photos 2 and 3 show the appearance after treatment.
Perfect symmetry was achieved.
The left and right gumlines line up precisely.
The gum color was recreated so naturally that it's impossible to tell where the pink porcelain is.
The result is an overall balanced, beautiful smile.
Case 3: Recreating a Gum Deficiency Caused by Cleft Lip and Palate
The Situation Before Treatment
This is a case where cleft lip and palate had kept the gum on the left front-tooth side from developing properly.
The gum was congenitally deficient.
The old all-ceramic crowns weren't aesthetic at all.
Photo 1 shows the initial visit.
The gum on the left front-tooth side was missing, and the two sides were completely asymmetrical.
The existing crowns also had a dull color and an awkward shape.
The Treatment Plan
We used no-prep veneers on the right front tooth, and attempted gum recreation on the left front tooth.
For the left front tooth, we made a crown while filling in the missing gum area with pink porcelain.
This makes it possible to compensate for even a congenital deficiency.
After Treatment
Photos 2 and 3 show the appearance after treatment.
It's a truly dramatic change.
The gum on the left side was perfectly recreated.
The gum that was congenitally absent now looks as natural as if it had always been there.
With left-right symmetry achieved, the overall look is harmonious.
The tooth color was also improved to look bright and natural.
When You Might Need a Gum Veneer
There are various situations where a pink veneer or gum recreation is needed.
Gum Recession
When the gums recede with age
When the gums have worn away from improper brushing
When the gums have receded due to periodontal disease

When one side's gum sits higher or lower than the other

But with a pink veneer, you can see the result immediately after the procedure.

Pink porcelain accurately recreates the color of the gum.
It looks natural enough that it's indistinguishable from real gum tissue.
It's Reversible
As in Case 1, when done without any tooth reduction, it can be removed at any time.
If a problem arises, it can be restored to its original state.
It Can Be Combined with Other Treatments
Gum recreation can be done at the same time as veneer or all-ceramic crown treatment.
This makes it possible to resolve multiple issues at once.
