What matters most in veneer treatment

is, I believe, tooth health and satisfaction with the result.

Because it's an esthetic treatment,

being satisfied with the outcome is extremely important.

With cosmetic reshaping methods like veneers

or all-ceramic crowns, for the teeth to look beautiful,

the thickness of the ceramic matters.

For veneers, the ceramic is typically only about 0.1-0.7mm thick,

and because the ceramic is so thin,

it's often difficult to express much variation.

As a result, at many clinics, veneer treatment

often produces results that look white, opaque, and artificial.

Since esthetics are subjective,

some people may actually like veneers that look obviously done.

Even though veneers were done, they look so natural

that it's hard to tell them apart from real teeth,

and we treat every case with beautiful, natural-looking teeth as the goal.

Reducing as little tooth structure as possible

is better for tooth health,

so our goal is to achieve natural, beautiful veneers

through minimal tooth reduction.

This patient had fracture in the front teeth.

The tips of the teeth had fractured

due to attrition, or wear between the teeth.

Because there were many esthetic issues,

she wanted veneer treatment,

but the challenge was that she wanted tooth reduction kept to a minimum.

Since there was also an occlusal issue involved,

this wasn't an easy case for minimizing tooth reduction.

Another factor was that she wanted only the two front teeth treated.

Treating just two teeth

with no-prep or micro-reduction

is an extremely difficult task.

Less tooth reduction means a thinner ceramic,

and a thinner ceramic makes it harder to express a natural look,

which is why clinics often treat several teeth at once

to make matching the tooth color easier,

but this case required capturing the full feel of natural teeth with minimal thickness.

Through diagnosis,

we need to decide how to proceed and how much tooth reduction is needed,

and we also had to test whether a no-prep approach was even feasible.

We also decide what material the Gangnam no-prep veneer will be made from.

The chipped edges of the teeth need to be smoothed out.

Beyond that, we smooth the sides of the teeth slightly

to prepare so the teeth won't end up looking too large.

With no-prep treatment, the teeth inevitably end up a bit larger than before,

and since the current tooth proportions wouldn't look good if they got any larger,

a fine smoothing process is necessary.

The photo above shows the state after this smoothing process was complete.

We proceed with fabricating the veneers.

For no-prep veneers, using feldspathic ceramic allows for an even more natural result.

However, this is the most demanding fabrication process among veneer types,

and technically very difficult as well.

But it's also the method that can achieve the most beautiful result at the thinnest possible thickness.

Even as same-day methods, quickly made by computer in a single day, become more common,

we continue to stick with this analog approach in pursuit of the ultimate esthetic result.

This veneer is so thin it's almost see-through.

We placed the Gangnam no-prep veneer onto the tooth to check the fit.

That translucent feel is practically a hallmark of youthful teeth.

To capture the feel of natural teeth as much as possible,

sufficient translucency has to be built in.

The shading also needs to vary across different areas of the tooth.

This was a case where harmony with the surrounding natural teeth was extremely important.

that it's hard to distinguish from natural teeth.

is nearly impossible to tell.
