Cheongdam-dong Dental Clinic: Veneer Treatment for Black Triangles

By Park Jonguk, DDS, MS — board-certified specialist in conservative dentistry Published

Hello, I'm Dr. Park Jonguk, director of Dream Dental Clinic in Cheongdam-dong.

When the gum between the front teeth recedes and a dark triangle appears,

this is called a black triangle.

Usually, as the gum condition worsens

and the underlying bone recedes, the gum recedes along with it,

and once the gum between the teeth disappears,

that area looks dark, which is why it's called a black triangle.

This same phenomenon tends to occur after orthodontic treatment,

and the shape of the tooth itself can also be a contributing factor.

Whatever the cause, once a black triangle appears,

treatment options are either filling just that area with resin,

or veneer treatment.

Resin treatment

is suitable when there's no other issue with tooth shape—only the black triangle.

There's no damage to the tooth and the cost is relatively low,

making it a simple option.

That said, if there's also a problem with tooth shape,

or if the black triangle is too large,

veneer treatment gives a better esthetic result.

A case where a dark triangle like the one in the photo above appears is called a black triangle.

The tooth shape wasn't attractive, and the patient wanted the yellowish tooth color made brighter as well.

One tooth also protruded slightly outward,

and near the gumline, there was even a spot of prior resin treatment for wear.

Front-tooth veneers are exactly what can resolve all of this at once.

We carry out an analysis of the teeth.

Using wax,

this is the process of predicting the current condition, the amount of reduction, and the final result.

Please see the link below for more detail on this.

After this wax-up precision diagnosis,

we proceed with treatment.

And here is the appearance after the veneer treatment was completed.

The defining feature of the veneers at our clinic, Dream Dental Clinic in Cheongdam-dong,

is naturalness.

Rather than a veneer that's obvious to anyone,

we aim for teeth that are natural yet beautiful.

As the black triangle was effectively filled,

the teeth were finished in a natural yet bright, beautiful shape,

completing the treatment.

Using veneers or all-ceramic crowns this way,

treating black triangles is quite common,

and the amount of tooth reduction varies depending on the situation.

Very careful diagnosis and treatment are essential,

and only extensive experience can produce a good result.

And another important point

is that the final teeth need to look natural.
