Front Teeth Veneers: Why Facial Harmony Matters

Front teeth veneer treatment is an esthetic treatment.

Improving the shape, form, and color of the teeth

is the primary goal,

but the overall direction of this treatment

must also harmonize with the face,

and especially with what could be called the tissue surrounding the teeth —

harmony with the shape of the mouth is also extremely important.

If you approach front teeth veneer treatment

at a micro level,

you end up looking only at each individual tooth,

but if you step back and look from farther away,

it becomes important that the teeth harmonize well with the lips and the face.

Harmonizing with the face means

the proportion between the teeth and the face,

how much of the teeth show when speaking or smiling,

and the angle of the teeth.

The angle of the teeth can be divided into the angle seen from the front

and the angle seen from the side.

What I'd like to explain today

is about the case where the difference in angle between the whole face and the teeth, seen from the front,

is corrected — and the esthetic improvement in front teeth veneers that results from that.

There are various issues that can arise after orthodontic treatment,

and one of them is the black triangle.

The black triangle that forms between the front teeth

often develops unavoidably during orthodontic treatment,

and it creates an esthetic problem.

The patient visited us for front teeth veneers to resolve this issue.

Of course, the teeth were also slightly misaligned and not in an ideal shape.

After orthodontic treatment, tooth movement can sometimes cause the alignment to worsen slightly,

and when there isn't enough time for re-orthodontic treatment, veneer treatment becomes an option.

Whatever the case, diagnosis before treatment is extremely important.

At our clinic, Dream Dental Clinic, before veneer treatment

we always go through a process to check harmony with the face.

During this process, we found that the angle of the teeth

didn't match the face.

In cases like this, quite a lot of people

aren't aware that the angle of their teeth doesn't align with the vertical line of the face.

So along with treating the black triangle,

we also decided to correct this tilted angle of the teeth.

While improving the black triangle issue, the alignment of the teeth, and the shape of the teeth,

we also improved the angle of the teeth at the same time.

What matters in a case like this

is precise diagnosis — determining through diagnosis how much the angle of the teeth can be improved,

and to achieve that,

simulating in advance how much tooth structure needs to be removed.

First, to align this angle with the face as a whole,

we check how the shape of the teeth needs to change.

Which teeth need to be lengthened and which need to be shortened,

and once that change is made, we check for harmony with the face, occlusal issues, and so on.

Throughout this diagnostic process,

we have to keep checking harmony with the face.

How these issues will be resolved using veneers,

and we analyze the resulting changes to the teeth more precisely.

Each tooth ends up with a different change in length,

so it's very important to make sure there are no occlusal problems.

Since a change in tooth length can create its own issues,

gum contouring also has to be done to match.

The amount of tooth reduction needed for this treatment has to be checked in advance.

And on top of that, wax is used to preview the treatment result beforehand.

This process is called precision wax-up diagnosis for front teeth veneer treatment.

Starting with harmony with the face, through changes in tooth proportion and size,

all the way to the amount of tooth reduction — this process checks it all.

Based on this simulated wax-up,

we proceed with the veneer treatment.

The front teeth veneer treatment has been completed.

The teeth are now even,

and you can see that the shape and color have completely changed.

You can also see that a natural expression has been well captured in the teeth.

With a variety of shades expressed within the teeth,

the natural feel comes through clearly.

The natural translucency at the edges of the teeth has also been well expressed.

Translucency at the tooth edges

is one of the hardest things to reproduce in ceramic,

yet it's also one of the biggest hallmarks of young teeth.

Getting these fine details right is extremely important.

Right down to the texture of the tooth surface,

you can see the appearance of natural teeth faithfully reproduced.
