Natural, Beautiful Veneers for the Front Teeth

By Park Jonguk, DDS, MS — board-certified specialist in conservative dentistry Published

Hello. I am Park Jonguk, DDS, MS of Dream Dental Clinic.

Front teeth average around 10mm in length,

and around 8mm in width.

That is a very small size.

Expressing varied esthetic qualities within these small dimensions

is the work of esthetic dentistry.

The pinnacle of esthetic dentistry is making the front teeth look natural

and beautiful.

Making teeth look beautiful means

making the ceramic used to fabricate veneers or all-ceramic crowns

look natural and beautiful.

A veneer involves reducing only the front surface of a tooth and bonding a thin ceramic plate to that surface,

whereas an all-ceramic crown involves reducing the tooth all around and completely covering it like a cap.

Because the ceramic in a veneer is only about 0.1-0.7mm thick,

expressing varied details in extremely thin ceramic is not easy.

Computer-fabricated veneers have become predominant, especially in recent years,

but this method can produce ceramic with only a single shade and level of translucency,

making it difficult to reproduce the appearance of natural teeth.

With the handmade approach, results can fall at opposite extremes.

A skilled dental technician may create veneers that resemble works of art,

whereas veneers made by a less experienced technician may be worse than computer-fabricated ones.

Even a single natural tooth has varied shades

and different levels of translucency.

Reproducing these details beautifully and in harmony

is both the defining characteristic and the goal of natural, beautiful front-tooth veneer treatment.

The patient visited because she wanted to brighten her teeth.

She said that her teeth had gradually developed more stains with age

and had become yellow overall.

The 2 front teeth were much larger than the other teeth.

Discoloration had begun at the edges of the front teeth, which is one sign of aging.

As teeth age,

the enamel layer becomes thinner or wears away,

causing the underlying dentin to show through more strongly or become exposed.

Because the dentin layer is relatively dark, the teeth become darker.

Also, when the translucent enamel layer is lost,

the glossy, translucent characteristics of youthful teeth disappear.

To address the various age-related changes

and give the front teeth a more youthful appearance with veneers,

we decided to proceed with treatment.

A detailed diagnostic wax-up process is performed.

This process plans the entire course of veneer treatment in advance.

Before treatment, we anticipate everything from the amount of tooth reduction to the treatment outcome

and establish a detailed treatment plan.

Our focus in this case was

reproducing youthful, beautiful teeth

and establishing proper proportions among the teeth.

Because only the 2 front teeth were too large, reducing their size

was extremely important for restoring the overall esthetics.

We reduce the teeth according to the plan.

Because the front teeth were large, the 2 teeth received standard reduction for veneers,

while the other teeth received almost no reduction.

The front-tooth veneer treatment has been completed.

You can see that the proportions among the front teeth have improved substantially.

As the front teeth became smaller, their width-to-height proportions also improved.

The tooth shade became brighter,

while translucency was reproduced well.

The teeth changed from a dry-looking, worn appearance

to a youthful and beautiful appearance.

They also harmonize well with the gums,

and the features of healthy gums remain fully visible.

The teeth treated with a no-prep approach

also look natural.
