Front Teeth Veneer Treatment for Tilted Teeth

By Park Jonguk, DDS, MS — board-certified specialist in conservative dentistry Published

Hello. I am Park Jonguk, director of Dream Dental Clinic.

When it comes to the relationship between the teeth and the face, there are a few things that need to be looked at before veneer treatment.

To assess the degree of protrusion and flaring of the teeth,

you need to observe the facial profile, meaning the side view of the face,

and to see how much the teeth are tilted relative to the face,

you need to look at the tilt from the front of the face.

In other words, you're checking both the protrusion and the tilt of the teeth.

Resolving both of these together

is quite a difficult task in veneer treatment.

When the degree is too severe, orthodontic treatment is the better option.

That said, even after orthodontic treatment,

if this kind of problem still exists and the patient wants it resolved,

front teeth veneers can sometimes be the only option.

This process of observing and diagnosing the relationship between the teeth and the face is very important.

Before treatment, through the wax-up precision diagnosis process,

we need to confirm that the expected result is satisfactory before proceeding with treatment.

For more details on the characteristics of this kind of veneer treatment at our Dream Dental Clinic and the diagnostic process,

Orthodontic treatment had already been completed,

but because of an issue with the shape of the teeth, we decided to go with front teeth veneer treatment.

When starting the diagnosis for veneers like this,

the first thing to look at isn't the teeth,

but rather to step back and check the face and the teeth as a whole.

As mentioned earlier,

the degree of protrusion and tilt need to be checked,

and this is judged using various analysis methods.

Since the degree of tilt was severe when viewed against the whole face,

we decided to improve this part as well.

In particular, even compared to the lower teeth, the tilt appears quite severe,

and since it wasn't resolved even with orthodontic treatment,

it needed to be resolved with veneers.

If you look at my post linked earlier,

you can see exactly how this diagnostic process is carried out.

Through this process,

we check the amount of tooth reduction in advance,

and precisely create the expected post-veneer result in wax.

Tooth reduction is carried out according to the results of the diagnosis.

In order to perform this kind of precise reduction,

a microscope is essential.

You can't tell apart a difference of about 0.1–0.5mm with the naked eye.

To correct the tilt of the teeth, on top of the basic amount of veneer reduction,

a bit of additional reduction is carried out precisely, exactly to the extent needed.

The veneers we make are handcrafted.

Recently, quite a lot of dental clinics have been doing veneer treatment made by computer using CAD/CAM.

Compared to handmade work, there's a large gap in quality in the end result.

Veneers made by computer in a day or two mostly turn out unnatural, awkward, and give that xylitol-gum kind of feel.

The handmade approach can fully capture the feel of natural teeth.

Of course, not just anyone can make them that way.

Many years of skilled know-how are essential.

The veneer treatment has been completed.

The tooth color is created to match the tone of the face.

The shape, too, needs to be made to suit the face by referencing the shape of the face.

Rather than the whole tooth being a single color,

it has to be fabricated by combining various colors for each part.

This is an area that computer-made methods simply cannot match.

Even the texture of the tooth surface is expressed in fine detail.

The surface of teeth has various patterns when young,

and becomes flatter with age.

To express young-looking teeth,

this kind of detail matters.
