Veneers for Large Teeth: OK Even When the Teeth Are Large

Honestly, in veneer treatment,

the most difficult case

is when the teeth are large and the patient wants them made smaller.

Making large teeth smaller

is not an easy task.

Sometimes it's possible,

and in many cases the effect just isn't very noticeable.

For large teeth to actually look smaller,

more reduction is required

than with typical veneer treatment,

and the adjacent teeth inevitably end up looking relatively larger.

Rather than actually making them smaller,

it's also possible to make them look smaller through an optical illusion.

By using the three-dimensional shape of the teeth,

you can make them appear smaller.

In most cases,

while actually making the teeth smaller,

various design elements are also added to create this illusion effect.

The large front teeth

and, from an old crown treatment,

two crowned teeth had come loose.

Even setting aside the fact that the crowns had come loose,

the size of the two front teeth, compared to the other teeth,

was simply too large.

If you draw the outline,

in this state,

it needs to change into this kind of look,

but the area marked with the orange circle

sticks out too far,

and no matter how much the tooth is reduced,

that area isn't a spot where the size can really be reduced.

Because the tooth is shaped like an inverted trapezoid,

if that area isn't handled beautifully,

not only is it hard to make the tooth look smaller,

it also can't end up with a pretty shape.

That said, you can't just reduce the tooth excessively either.

In many cases, when the teeth are this large,

a lot of dental clinics plan root canal treatment followed by a crown,

but that can end up being the worst possible result.

The nerve has been treated and a lot of the tooth has been cut down,

yet the tooth still doesn't look smaller.

Using wax,

a plan is made for what shape to aim for.

At this stage, the plan for exactly where and how much to reduce

already needs to be finalized,

and this needs to be explained to the patient in detail.

Without even knowing how much of the tooth will be reduced,

treatment should never be done in the dark like that.

This is the state after tooth reduction.

Treatment was planned as veneers plus crowns on six teeth.

The lateral incisor next to the front tooth

originally had a crown that had come loose,

so a crown treatment was carried out on that tooth as before,

while the other four teeth received veneer treatment.

As you can see, even though this is large-tooth veneer treatment aimed at reducing size,

the amount of reduction is actually quite small.

The large-tooth veneers have been completed.

The tooth that had been shaped like an inverted trapezoid

now has a normal shape.

On top of that, anyone would say it looks like a natural tooth.

It looks so natural, and the teeth also look smaller,

and the shape has become much prettier.

How was this possible??

It's exactly through an optical illusion

created with yellow staining.

Viewed from the side,

you can see the area where yellow was intentionally added.

This creates a visual effect

that makes the tooth look smaller.

It's a bit like makeup that makes a face look smaller.

The tooth on the other side didn't need much yellow added.

Just from the three-dimensional shape of the tooth alone,

there's already an effect that makes the tooth look smaller.

The yellow staining and the three-dimensional shape of the tooth,

these two elements are what make the teeth look smaller through the illusion.

Of course, beyond these,

the translucency at the tooth edge

and the texture of the tooth surface also matter.

Putting these kinds of detailed design elements

into large-tooth veneers really requires a considerable level of skill.

It's a method that the one-day approach popular these days, finished in a single day,

can never come close to matching.

This is something only true master craftsmanship can achieve.
