Veneer Treatment Including a Peg (Undersized) Lateral Tooth

Veneer treatment is a way of changing the shape of a tooth,

one method of tooth reshaping.

When it comes to tooth reshaping — that is, methods for improving and changing the shape of a tooth —

veneers and all-ceramic crowns

are the two options, but

since an all-ceramic crown covers the tooth completely, like putting a cap on it,

the amount of tooth reduction ends up being greater.

Veneers, by contrast, require far less tooth reduction, so

there tends to be less harm or side effects to the tooth.

Of course, that doesn't mean every veneer has few side effects.

Based on an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan,

the treatment must proceed accordingly, and

precise treatment is essential.

The tooth sizes were uneven.

The front tooth was very large, while the tooth next to it was a very small, undersized (peg) tooth.

Each tooth had a different color, and

the shapes varied as well.

This was a situation where teeth that varied so much from one another had to be brought into harmony.

In reshaping the teeth this way,

the most important factor in this case was

that the root area of the two front teeth was thick.

Even most dentists,

without experience with a case like this,

would find it hard to grasp what exactly the problem is here.

Over many years of performing veneer treatment,

I've encountered a wide range of cases,

and among them there are a few particularly difficult ones — one of them is

veneers for cases where the tooth root is thick.

There are two approaches.

One is to solve it by removing a large amount of tooth structure, and

the other is to create an optical illusion through design.

Removing a large amount of tooth structure is not a good approach.

A wax mock-up is used to plan out how the treatment will proceed.

We work out how to effectively make the small tooth look larger while

checking how to bring it into proportion with the other teeth.

For the thick root area of the two front teeth,

we decided to address it through design.

Treatment has been completed.

The teeth became noticeably brighter, and

more beautiful, and

although the proportions between the teeth weren't brought perfectly in line with the average,

the size of the undersized tooth became far more natural.

The root area is tinted a yellowish color.

This is described as adding a yellow stain,

and it has the visual effect of making that area appear narrower.

From the translucency at the tip of the tooth to its natural shape and sense of dimension,

through a variety of expressive techniques,

we made teeth appear smaller or larger as needed, while

completing a natural beauty.
