Retreating Unnatural, Awkward-Looking Veneers

The number of dental restorations

made by computer has been growing recently.

They're restorations designed by computer

and fabricated using a machine called a milling machine.

Zirconia and most other ceramics

can be processed this way.

This kind of fabrication has considerable advantages.

It saves on both cost and time.

Many restorations are shifting toward this method,

but in terms of aesthetics, it still lags far behind.

Beyond saving cost and time,

it has no aesthetic advantage whatsoever.

Front teeth naturally carry a range of colors and translucency,

but veneers or all-ceramic crowns

made this way, using the one-day method,

end up with the same color and the same translucency throughout,

so they're mostly produced white and opaque.

Let's look at the retreatment of an awkward, unnatural-looking veneer.

This is the kind of feel it ends up with.

It's often described as looking like a row of xylitol gum stuck on.

The whole tooth is treated completely opaque and excessively white.

A natural tooth, by contrast, has a wide range of colors and translucency.

The color and translucency differ from area to area.

To achieve that kind of expression,

it's only possible by hand,

and it requires considerable skill and experience.

It also takes far more time and costs far more.

Now let's start the retreatment to make it natural.

First, we remove the veneer — this could be called the most important part of retreatment.

Doing this with a laser is, in my experience, the safest way

and the method that reduces damage to the tooth the most.

Even the remaining cement has been cleanly removed at this stage.

Now, using ceramic,

we begin fabricating a veneer that carries the feel of a natural tooth.

The veneer retreatment has been completed.

The shape and dimensionality of the teeth were expressed naturally,

and even the color and translucency

were reproduced in fine detail.

Checking from a variety of angles,

you can confirm that it was finished into a shape that's both natural and beautiful.

The color also matches well with the other natural teeth,

and it captures the full range of expression found in young, natural teeth.
