A Case of No-Prep and Minimal-Prep Front-Tooth Veneer Treatment

By Park Jonguk, DDS, MS — board-certified specialist in conservative dentistry Published

Hello. I'm Park Jonguk, director of Dream Dental Clinic.

There are many reasons for front-tooth veneer treatment.

Treatment is done for issues with tooth shape, color, alignment, and so on.

Since it's a treatment for aesthetics rather than restoring function,

it should, as much as possible, avoid seriously damaging the tooth's health.

Some patients come in with a front tooth chipped from an accident or similar cause.

When the degree of chipping is too severe,

root canal treatment is needed, and rather than a veneer,

an all-ceramic crown may be required,

but if the chip is minor,

treatment with resin or a veneer is possible.

Along with this, the color and shape of other teeth are sometimes corrected as well,

and it would obviously be ideal if this could be done without any reduction.

Let's look at a case where a minimal amount of reduction was done for the chipped tooth,

and no-prep front-tooth veneers were done for the other teeth.

The patient came in with a front tooth chipped like this.

At this point there were two options.

Leave the cracked tooth as it is

and do resin treatment

only on the chipped tooth.

A crack of that size often doesn't seriously affect the tooth,

so this option gives up a bit on the aesthetic side

in favor of doing only the minimum treatment.

But since the crack was too noticeable in this case,

we decided to do veneers on 2 teeth.

The patient also wanted the tooth color a bit brighter,

so we planned to combine it with whitening,

and since the teeth were well-aligned, didn't protrude, and were small,

veneers that were essentially no-prep were possible in this situation.

So we reduced only the front teeth,

and decided to proceed with the other teeth using minimal or no reduction at all.

To further improve the overall shape of the teeth,

we carried out wax-up precision diagnosis.

This is the state after tooth reduction was completed.

You can see

that even less was reduced than expected.

During treatment, we make temporary teeth

and continually fine-tune the amount of reduction,

carrying out only the minimum reduction.

We fabricate the front-tooth veneers in ceramic.

Dream Dental Clinic's hallmark

is natural beauty.

We aim for teeth that are beautiful

without being noticeable as veneers.

A veneer with a feel just like a natural tooth

is something a computer-made

one-day method simply cannot match;

the fabrication process itself is on a different level.

We placed the veneer one side at a time

to check the difference against the natural tooth.

You can confirm that even the sides of the tooth are properly wrapped.

That's an important point for front-tooth veneers.

This is a front-tooth veneer for which the phrase 'natural beauty' fits perfectly.

The harmony with the gums is good too, and you can confirm a healthy state.

Even checking from a variety of angles,

you can see the color and shape of the teeth improved considerably with only minimal reduction.

Even the texture of the tooth surface

is expressed remarkably naturally.
