Natural Veneer Treatment for Chipped Teeth

The goal of veneer treatment

is to make the teeth beautiful.

It's a treatment that "reshapes" irregularities in the tooth's form or color.

These aesthetic problems come in many forms.

Some are congenital,

but tooth reshaping with veneers or all-ceramic crowns is also used for fractures caused by trauma

or for color changes caused by root canal treatment and the like.

In the case of fractures in particular,

the cause of the fracture has to be identified before treatment.

If the cause is occlusal, meaning the front teeth strike each other while chewing and chip,

the bite needs to be checked.

Keeping the front teeth from touching each other isn't something veneer treatment alone can achieve,

so it may need to be combined with other occlusal treatment.

If the fracture is caused by some other habit,

correcting that habit is also part of the process.

A front-tooth veneer isn't harder than the natural tooth,

so if the force is enough to fracture a tooth,

the ceramic will naturally fracture as well, and this needs to be recognized

and thought through as a problem to solve before treatment.

There is a fracture at the tip of the front tooth.

You can see the tooth is chipped in a jagged, saw-tooth pattern.

This wasn't caused by eating habits, occlusion, or any other habit;

it was fractured by a one-time trauma,

so veneer treatment was possible right away.

Even so, checking the bite is essential.

We need to check how much force the tooth takes while eating.

While making the fractured tooth beautiful,

we proceed with veneer treatment to improve both the shape and color of the tooth.

We carry out a diagnosis of the current state of the teeth.

We measure the tooth proportions

and calculate factors like the degree of protrusion,

then plan out how much of the tooth to reduce.

There isn't generally a single fixed ratio for tooth proportions.

At one point there was a claim that tooth-to-tooth proportions should match the golden ratio,

but that's not generally accepted today.

It's better to adjust the proportion according to the face shape.

We build an expectation for the amount of tooth reduction

and an expectation for the result.

This process before front-tooth veneer treatment,

combining a precise analysis of the current teeth,

a prediction of the amount of reduction, and a wax-up of the expected result,

is called wax-up precision diagnosis.

It's an essential step for any front-tooth reshaping, whether veneers or all-ceramic crowns.

We carry out tooth reduction according to that plan.

What matters is reducing only the minimum needed for a beautiful result,

and preserving as much as possible of the enamel, the outermost layer of the tooth.
