Veneer Redo Treatment That Reduces Damage While Restoring Esthetics

Lately, more and more patients have been coming in for redo treatment after veneer treatment.
Rather than patients coming in because of fracture or debonding after years of use,
more come in because of esthetic problems.
Esthetic problems include cases where the alignment of the teeth shifted after veneer treatment and no longer looks good,
or cases where discoloration develops in the veneer near the gum line,
but quite a few patients also come in because the esthetics of the veneer itself are the problem.
In short, they got veneers, but they simply don't look good.
In particular, quite a few patients
come in for redo treatment just a month or two after being treated at a large veneer clinic.
They were treated based on advertising claims like being finished in a single day, or being some treatment other than a veneer,
or even having a proprietary material that no other clinic can use,
and after treatment, the veneers turned out so artificial and opaque
that they say things ended up looking esthetically worse than before.
This patient, too, came in for redo treatment
because she wasn't happy with how her veneers looked after treatment.
The teeth were just too white,
and depending on the angle, they had a strong grayish tint,
so she came in for redo treatment because she disliked the look.
The patient had wanted translucent, natural-looking teeth,
but the grayish, artificial look was too strong, so she wanted them redone.
Large clinics that focus mainly on treating as many patients as quickly as possible,
rather than on esthetics, simply can't pay attention to details this fine.
If a translucent material is used for translucent-looking teeth without the right technique, it inevitably ends up looking grayish.
In particular, the one-day method doesn't build up
various ceramics in a multilayer way,
so the result ends up either very dull or awkward-looking, like in this case.
We work out the treatment plan and target shape through a wax-up precision diagnosis.
The existing veneers then need to be removed,
and to remove them while minimizing damage to the tooth, a laser needs to be used.

Once the veneers were removed... far too much tooth structure had been reduced.
The excessive reduction had left the teeth prone to a variety of side effects.
We proceed with fabricating the new veneers.
The one-day method is simple, with a machine milling a ceramic block,
but the multilayer handmade method is a very demanding, lengthy fabrication process.
Since each piece has to be made by hand, one at a time,
it requires a highly skilled ceramist and a great deal of time.
Fabrication takes a long time, but because the result is so outstanding,
it simply can't be compared to the one-day method, which is designed for easy, quick fabrication.
The veneer redo treatment has now been completed.
The feel of a natural tooth comes through well,
and the shape and color of a young tooth,
along with its translucency, have all been well expressed.
Comparing before and after,
the difference between natural, young, beautiful teeth
and the artificial look of the one-day method can be seen at a glance.
Recently, this kind of one-day treatment has been increasing more and more.
If anything, clinics that make beautiful veneers
with the feel of a natural tooth are nearly disappearing.
Patients need to be wary of exaggerated advertising that has nothing to do with actual medical merit.
This is how it looked four years after treatment was completed.
We had been concerned because so much tooth structure had been reduced,
but no side effects have appeared at all.
