Correcting Front-Tooth Asymmetry with Minimal-Prep Veneers for a Natural Balance

Differences in front-tooth size and asymmetry in shape can significantly change the impression of a smile.

Using minimal-prep veneers, Park Jonguk, DDS, MS of Dream Dental Clinic harmonized the proportions and shapes of the large front teeth,

creating a natural, translucent esthetic line.

The size and shape of the front teeth are important factors in determining the impression of the face.

However, if the 2 front teeth are large or differ in size,

the smile can look unnatural and crowded.

The patient who visited us had 2 large front teeth,

and because they also differed in size, the asymmetry was pronounced.

In addition, wear on the teeth made the imbalance in shape even more noticeable.

In such a case, the problem cannot be resolved simply by adding veneers to the teeth.

The proportions of the teeth, the gumline, and the condition of any cavities must all be considered.

Because a no-prep approach alone is difficult, minimal tooth reduction and an accurate diagnosis are essential.

The tooth shapes were irregular, and the 2 front teeth differed in size,

resulting in pronounced asymmetry.

The teeth were also yellow, and wear had left the surface texture uneven.

Tooth wear, differences in gum height, and cavities between the teeth were also present.

To match the sizes of the front teeth while removing the cavities,

precise reduction between the teeth was necessary.

Gum contouring was also planned to correct the difference in gum height.

After aligning the gumline, we made provisional teeth

and reviewed their shape and size together with the patient.

This process is an important step that allows us

to preview the final veneer outcome.

To harmonize the shape and shade naturally,

we fabricated them with several ceramic layers using a multilayer buildup (multi-layer stacking technique), or Hand-Layered, method.

The asymmetry is gone, and the teeth harmonize very naturally with the gums.

The formerly large, heavy-looking appearance changed into a soft, refined smile.

Conclusion

Front-tooth veneers are not simply a treatment that covers the teeth.

The size and proportions of the teeth, gum height, and harmony with the facial shape must all be considered

to achieve genuine naturalness.
