Sinsa-dong Dental Clinic — All-Ceramic Crown Redo

Hello, I am Park Jonguk, director of Sinsa-dong Dream Dental Clinic.

For making the shape of teeth pretty,

dental contouring

has two methods: veneers and all-ceramic crowns.

A veneer reduces only the front surface of the tooth,

and bonds a thin ceramic plate to the front,

while an all-ceramic crown reduces the tooth all the way around

and caps it like putting on a hat.

The all-ceramic crown

is used when there is severe tooth discoloration or root canal treatment has been done,

or when the tooth is fractured or has severe decay.

Because the amount of reduction is large,

a veneer is used whenever possible,

but it's the method used in these unavoidable cases.

Whether it's a veneer or an all-ceramic crown,

after some time passes a redo is generally needed,

and the reasons vary widely — the ceramic fracturing, the tooth position changing,

or discoloration of the underlying tooth

causing an aesthetic problem, among others.

Two fractured all-ceramic crowns can be seen.

This is the tooth right next to the front tooth,

called the lateral incisor.

One side has a crack,

and the other side fractured and was temporarily bonded back together.

The tooth color also appears to have discolored quite a bit.

In addition, the tooth color itself had turned very grayish,

so to resolve these various aesthetic issues

we decided to do a redo.

To resolve these various issues,

a precise treatment plan has to be established.

We need to properly identify the current problems,

and put together a detailed plan

for how to solve those problems.

Using the wax-up precision diagnosis method shown above,

we establish the treatment plan.

For the shape of the teeth,

to make it more natural,

we give it three-dimensionality.

The proportion of the teeth needs to be adjusted,

and since this part is determined by the position and size of the natural teeth,

it is decided by considering both gum health and aesthetics.

Once the all-ceramic crowns were removed,

we could see that the discoloration of the tooth was severe,

and that the tooth had already been reduced far too much.

We remove as much of the discoloration as possible,

and finely refine the shape of the tooth,

so that no further damage occurs to the tooth,

while proceeding with treatment.

We re-treat the secondary caries (decay that recurs after cavity treatment),

and remove as much discoloration as possible.

We made changes so the color and shape of the teeth feel more like natural teeth,

and you can confirm that the inflammation that had been in the gums also disappeared.
