Redoing Unnatural, Opaque Front-Tooth Veneers

There are broadly two ways front-tooth veneers are made.

One is a hand-crafted veneer produced through

a dental technician's skill.

It's the traditional method, but aesthetically it's still the best.

The other method is one made by computer,

and treatment is mostly finished within a short time,

sometimes completed the same day if fast,

but the result always ends up feeling fairly awkward and artificial.

Even though the gap is this large,

the computer-made one-day method

is simpler to produce and, once the equipment is in place, can lower production costs,

so more and more clinics have been choosing this method recently.

However, the result still falls short

compared with hand-crafted work, so in my case

I insist on hand-crafted work.

The patient visited us to change unnatural-looking veneers into natural ones.

The entire ceramic was opaque,

and the shape was awkward and not even symmetrical.

The shape of the teeth showed no sense of natural teeth whatsoever.

To make teeth like this look natural through retreatment,

a variety of changes are needed in the tooth's color, dimensionality, and translucency.

First, we run a diagnosis to decide how to proceed with treatment.

To improve the proportions and shape of the teeth,

we build the tooth shape in advance with wax

and carry out a precision wax-up diagnosis.

Treatment then proceeds according to this result.

When removing the veneer for retreatment, what matters most

is minimizing damage to the tooth.

Using the method above, we removed the veneer with a laser for retreatment.

As in the photo on the left, only the ceramic comes off while the cement remains,

and the remaining cement must be removed under a microscope

to reduce damage to the tooth.

The veneer retreatment has been completed.

The teeth turned out bright and beautiful.

With enough translucency and dimensionality given to the teeth,

the natural feel clearly shows through.

As time passes after retreatment, you can see that even the gaps between the gums have all closed up.

From the awkward, artificial feel before treatment,

the teeth have become natural and full of dimensionality.
