What Makes Teeth Beautiful? A Natural, Beautiful Veneer Retreatment

Lately, many patients come to see me not long after having veneers placed elsewhere,

because they want to have the treatment redone.

Most of the time, the reason is that the result looks so unnatural

that everyone who sees them brings up their teeth.

The teeth end up looking like they're floating, out of place.

I often describe it as "looking like a stick of xylitol gum stuck onto the teeth."

Because everyone's standard of beauty is different,

some people do genuinely like flat, opaque, pure-white teeth,

but if you consider that the end goal of most cosmetic procedures is a natural look,

then cosmetic dental work should also aim to look

naturally beautiful as its ultimate goal.

What matters even more

is why most of these cases end up so unnatural and simply white —

from the clinic's perspective,

it's because that kind of fabrication is far easier and simpler.

To make veneers look like natural teeth

requires a highly skilled dental technician,

along with a considerable amount of material, equipment, and time.

The patient came in for a retreatment

because of unnatural-looking veneers.

The teeth had a color that didn't match the surrounding natural teeth at all,

and an attempt at translucency had been handled so awkwardly

that some areas ended up looking darker instead —

it was a veneer that fell quite short.

Near the gum line, a slightly opaque quality is needed,

but the entire veneer had been made with a single material,

and that's what caused the problem.

This is a common misunderstanding even among dentists —

that to create a sense of translucency,

you should use the most translucent material available.

But an overly translucent material can actually end up looking darker.

If you look at the tooth color near the gums in this case,

you can see it actually looks darker.

A case like this is the result of excessive reduction combined with the wrong choice of material.

Starting from this state, we decided to use a veneer retreatment

to transform the teeth into something both natural and beautiful.

Using wax,

we build a preview of how the teeth will change beforehand.

We shape the teeth while factoring in the face shape, skin tone, and the form of the surrounding teeth.

At this point, the old veneers have to be removed for the retreatment.

Most clinics remove veneers only by grinding them off,

which can damage the tooth in the process.

Removing veneers with a laser

The amount of tooth structure that had been removed

was close to shocking.

"Was it really necessary to remove this much?"

was the thought that kept coming to mind.

As mentioned earlier,

the combination of an overly translucent material and excessive reduction

was what produced such an unnatural-looking veneer.

Now it's time to properly begin fabrication.

For a case like this,

fabricating the veneer through buildup on an E-max base works best.

This handcrafted process moves forward one careful step at a time

as fabrication begins.

Because it takes so much time and cost,

many clinics these days instead make veneers by computer in a single day.

They give these various names and advertise them as if they were a completely different treatment from veneers,

but they're all still veneers.

Only the name has been dressed up.

The finished veneers made this way are then set in place.

The shape of the teeth is fabricated to match the patient's face shape.

Each individual tooth is given its own optimal design,

and you can see the natural translucency at the tooth tips.

A touch of yellow staining is added near the gum line,

so it blends naturally into the gums,

and the tooth's dimensionality shows an even more natural quality.
