Are No-Prep Veneers Possible on Every Tooth?
Hello, I'm Park Jonguk, director of Dream Dental Clinic.
Even in lectures I give to dentists,
whenever I bring up no-prep veneers,
I often get asked, "Is that really possible?"
That's how many people
simply don't know much about no-prep veneers.
In truth, veneer treatment itself
tends to divide dentists into those like me, who do this treatment regularly,
and those at clinics that almost never do it.
Experience matters a great deal in any kind of treatment.
Having a lot of experience means having handled that many more cases,
which in turn means trying a wide range of approaches across many different cases.
No-prep veneers are no exception.
Based on extensive experience, you have to work out
which cases can be treated without reduction, through diagnosis and planning.
There are three key principles for when no-prep veneers are possible.
1. The alignment of the teeth needs to be good
2. The teeth need to be small
3. The teeth must not be protruding
If a case meets these three principles,
we begin with a precise diagnosis for a no-prep treatment.
Viewed from the side, you can see this patient had a fairly pronounced retruded bite.
This kind of retruded bite sometimes develops in people who've had orthodontic treatment.
That's why a good number of no-prep veneer patients
come in because their teeth ended up sitting too far back
after orthodontic treatment, and they want veneers to fix it.
In this kind of retruded-bite situation,
the teeth need to be brought forward.
We carry out a precise diagnostic wax-up accordingly.
We use wax to build a preview, on a plaster model, of how the teeth will look after the veneer treatment.
Once this is made,
we can see the shape of the teeth in the mouth ahead of treatment.
Using a material called resin,
we make a temporary veneer over the tooth
to check the volume, proportion, and size of the veneer after treatment.
It doesn't have the translucency or range of expression that ceramic has,
so we can only check the general shape with it.
We placed the finished veneer
over the tooth.
As it becomes a bit larger than the original tooth,
the tooth keeps a bright, clear, translucent feel.
You can see the retruded bite is now fully corrected.
The treatment is complete.
Even though it was made with quite thin ceramic,
we expressed a range of color and translucency within it,
fully capturing the feel of a natural tooth.
Even from a variety of angles,
the natural-tooth feel holds up well.
These days, same-day veneers made by computer have become the dominant trend,
but at Dream Dental Clinic, we use a handmade process,
which takes a bit more time,
yet expresses a natural beauty
that the same-day method simply cannot match.
Please see the link below for that difference.
You can see the retruded bite has also been fully resolved.
